LL 1998 Member Honored

special thanks to Chief Steward Yvonne Kuhlmann
and GLR Maria Santiago Lillis

Congratulations are in order for Reynold Saito, a member of IAM Local Lodge 1998 and an employee at the Raytheon (Tracking Station) at Kaena Point, Hawaii.  Brother Saito has been awarded the Professional Performer award by the Commander at the site.

Reynold has dedicated himself for many years here at the site whether it be training new hires in his area of work, walking them through steps (from his home) while they're working their shift and needs guidance, always making himself available in filling the work schedule and just making sure the mission is a success and not a failure.

The detailed information released at the site is:

Reynold Saito, ARTS Operator, was presented a Professional Performer Award by Major Lackey on 10 Dec 03. The 50th Space Wing Award recognized Reynold for outstanding performance as the 22 SOPS HULA A Side technician during Opinicus Vista 03-04.

MSgt Schreiner wrote that "Technician was extremely knowledgeable of antenna operations/maintenance and devoured the simulated antenna brake malfunction in no time flat. Technician was very thorough, walking me through every step of the simulated troubleshooting and repair process while maintaining total control of all real world operatons. His positive attitude and extensive system knowledge were a real plus."

Our congratulations to Reynold.

GVP Lee Pearson said, "This is a very prestigious recognition, and helps to highlight the quality work that our members do everyday.  Brother Saito obviously deserves this honor, and the IAM is proud that he carries out his duties with such professionalism.  Way to go Reynold, keep up the great work."

Machinist Manganese Health Awareness Program

The safety and health of members of the IAM & AW is and always will be a top priority.  It is now clear that exposure to certain welding rods fumes through inhalation can damage the nervous system and respiratory tract.

What is Manganese?

  • Manganese is a toxin that destroys brain cells and is a major concern for welders.

  • Many steel mills, chemical plants, shipyards, auto plants, and other industrial sites have regularly used welding rods.

  • Welding rods, wire, and electrodes contain manganese.

  • If you were either employed as a welder or worked around industrial welding, you may have been exposed to manganese contained in the welding rod fumes.

  • The toxins contained in welding rod fumes, especially manganese, have been shown to cause a variety of neurological and movement disorders.

The early onset of a Parkinson’s like syndrome is associated with manganese poisoning and extensive welding fume inhalation. Information now indicates that the welding rod manufactures knew of this risk.

For all the above reasons, we have established the IAM & AW Manganese Health Awareness Program in an effort to better serve our membership.
